Will the colour run?
Do a steam test!
Iron a little corner of the garment you’re doubtful about, putting it between two pieces of white cloth. If the colour runs, it is a delicate garment which should be hand-washed separately or taken to the dry cleaners.
Shampooing your laundry.
You can use ordinary shampoo as a pre-treatment on the collars and cuffs of shirts. Simply apply shampoo to dirty areas and then put the shirts into the washing machine as usual.
Lace and lingerie
Take good care of your lace bras, petticoats, and culottes. Put them into a pillowcase and they’ll be perfectly safe in the washing machine. Your garments won’t be spoiled, and underwiring won’t come out in the spin cycle; otherwise, it could get stuck in the machine and necessitate expensive repairs!
Extra soft cashmere
To keep cashmere woollens beautiful, add a spoonful of baking soda to the rinse water. It will keep them soft and prevent matting.
Baby clothes
Regular washing machine detergent may cause allergies; use pure soap flakes instead. You can wash baby’s woollens in the water you’ve used to boil pasta. Add grated potato to the rinse water in place of whitener.
