  • woollens last longer if you turn them inside out before washing them. This prevents those annoying little bobbles from forming. If your woollens have become matted, leave them to soak for 24 hours in cold water containing 1 spoonful of ammonia per litre;
  • if your woollens have turned yellow, leave them to soak for 24 hours in water containing the juice of 2 lemons per litre, or 1 spoonful of hydrogen peroxide every 3 litres.
  • to keep silk soft, add lemon juice, vinegar or a little salt to the final rinse. If the silk has yellowed, rinse it in cold water to which you have added two tablespoons of milk and a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. To make silk look new again, soak it for half an hour in salted water.
  • hand-washed laundry. Soak white linen, cotton and hemp garments for an hour and coloured garments for ten minutes.
  • lace and tulle can be freshened up if washed in rice water: boil a spoonful of rice in half a litre of water for some time, then filter the water and, if it is too dense, thin it with more water before using it.
